Probably the most quoted line in all the writings of the early rabbis is from Rabbi Hillel: “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself, what am I? and if not now, when?” (Mishnah Avot 1:14).
American Jews today are caught in the tension between looking out for out own safety and wellbeing on the one hand, and standing up for justice for others. The American Jewish World Service Haggadah that we are using tonight is just one example of that tension. May we find a bridge between these two essential goals.
