Bernard Goodman, emeritus professor of
physics at the University of Cincinnati and a lifelong explorer of the scientific mysteries of our universe, died Monday (March 27) at his home in the Clifton neighborhood. He was 99. A graveside funeral is at 1 p.m. Friday (March 31) at Clifton Cemetery on Ludlow Ave.
Bernie, the youngest of four children of immigrants from Russian-ruled Ukraine, was born and raised in south Philadelphia. He was the first in his family to attend college, winning a mayor's scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. He earned a BA and PhD at Penn, where he spent World War II conducting remote sensing research for the military.
His academic career in theoretical condensed-matter physics began at the University of Missouri and continued at Cincinnati.
He married Joyce Willoughby in Chicago in 1951. She died in 2018. They have three sons -- David, Jonathan and Mark -- five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family welcomes visitors during shiva at Bernie's home, 3411 Cornell Place, Cincinnati, Friday afternoon through Sunday 8 p.m. There will be shiva minyanim in person and Zoom at 8 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday.
Son and daughter-in-law David Goodman and Pearl Raz welcome shiva visitors Monday evening through Wednesday morning at their home at 8220 Manor Road in Elkins Park, PA. There will be in-person and Zoom minyanim at 7 p.m. Monday and 7 p.m. Tuesday.
