Shavuot: The Celebration of Giving the Law
This is my last message to you from the Holy Land, where I wrap up my participation in a Jewish-Palestinian reconciliation delegation this Wednesday. I’m flying home to celebrate the holiday of Shavuot with my Nafshenu friends.
Shavuot marks the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. It’s celebrated for two days outside the Land of Israel, beginning at sunset on Thursday, May 25. Nafshenu will be marking it Friday evening (6-8pm) before the sun goes down and we move into Shabbat. We’ll have a service and dinner in our Mary's Room at Prince of Peace Church. Zoomers can connect at bit.ly/NafTorah.
The ritual highlight of Shavuot is the reading of the Ten Commandments. Many of you may remember one year ago, when we joined with our hosts at Prince of Peace for a joint Shavuot-Pentecost celebration, co-led by me and Pastor Brett Ballenger. While Brett has moved on, his community graciously continues to
offer us a meeting space – without charge.
The Shavuot celebration will be a Nafshenu event this year, but I hope we can do something together with Prince of Peace for the next Shavuot in 2024.
Come for the Service and fun! Stay for Dinner and community! Dinner is provided at $18 a person 13 years of age or older. Children 12 and under are free of charge.
