"Why do we read this Torah portion at this time of year?" That's a question I and other rabbis get all the time. The
answer is simple: The yearly cycle of Torah readings (This week's Shoftim, Deuteronomy 16:18-21:9) has no connection to the celebration of the holidays that the Torah describes. But the Haftarah has a lot to say about the process of turning one's life around that is the core theme of Rosh Hashanah and the High Holidays.
