YOM KIPPUR at NAFSHENU

          Please join your Nafshenu Community on Yom Kippur, the holy day on which we seek to “lock in” the improvements that are the focus of our High Holidays. You can click on the signup tabs below the descriptions of our three Yom Kippur services: Kol Nidre at 6pm Friday night (Oct. 11), Yom Kippur morning at 9:30 am, Saturday (Oct. 12) and Ne’ilah and break fast at 6 pm Saturday (Oct. 12). All are at Prince of Peace.

          We’ll continue with our theme for this year’s High Holidays: “Comfort, Comfort.” The goal is to be kind and gentle with ourselves and with each other as a big step in bringing positive change into the world. I and guest student Rabbi Rakhel Silverman-Gitin are focusing on bringing meaning and hope as we lead the traditional prayers and rituals. – Rabbi David Goodman

Kol Nidre

The short Yom Kippur evening service is named for the chant in which the leader asks that the people and community be released from promises that they didn’t keep. The idea is we can start the new year with a clean slate. We start at 6 pm at Prince of Peace.

Calm and focused contemplation are the guiding principles of our Yom Kippur morning, with prayers, English readings, Torah service, sermon and discussions. We also will have a Yizkor (Memorial) servic so we can honor, and say Mourner’s Kaddish, for the loved ones we have lost. Start is 9:30 am at Prince of Peace.

While not required, our community traditionally wears white for Yom Kippur.

Ne’ilah and Break Fast

A short service and a last blast of the shofar mark the end of our Yom Kippur rituals. It is the point where we try to “lock in” the changes we have made – and aim to make – through the High Holidays and enter into the year 5785 with hope and confidence. There will be food on hand (fish plate, etc.), but please bring a dish to share. Start is 6 pm at Prince of Peace.
