As a wise man (or wise guy) once said, "School's Out for Summer"!*  Nafshenu is taking a relaxed approach to Shabbat this week. After all, we're on vacation, right? 

Our Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat takes a Broadway musical approach to the themes in this week's Torah and Haftarah readings. 

What do "You'll Be Back" from Hamilton, "Promises, Promises" from the musical by that name, and "Immigration Man" by Crosby and Nash (OK, not from Broadway) have to say about the biblical themes? 

No. 1: A lot! No. 2: Who cares? It's great music! CLICK THE LINKS WITH THE SONG TITLES.

We'll start at 6:30pm with the music -- sing along if you want -- then welcome in Shabbat with candle lighting. A discussion integrating the songs' messages with those from the Bible readings is the core of a short service, followed by potluck dinner with New York style pizza. I'll order the pizza, you bring a salad, drinks or dessert.

ZOOM BIBLE STUDY 

This weeks Torah and Haftarah are from the last chapters of the book of Numbers (30:2-36:13)  and Isaiah (66:1-24). As the Shabbat blurb above suggests, the passages deal with oaths and oath-keeping ("Promises, Promises"), God's love-hate relationship with the Israelites/Jews ("You'll Be Back")  and protection of refugees ("Immigration Man.")
